"My paternal grandfather was AfroCuban. He, both my parents, most of my siblings and I were all born in Santiago de Cuba. My grandmothers were both born in Kingston, Jamaica. My mom's dad was born in Spain and her grandfather was born in China. That makes my heritage African, Cuban, Jamaican, Spanish and Chinese."

"Lili Bernard infuses a sticky combination of spirituality and satire into her offerings here. She is known widely for her paintings of Orishas, the saint-like pre-Christian gods worshipped in the Caribbean by African slaves. She expands on that theme with inventive sculptural altars to hair salons as well as a satirical advertisement for Orishas as natural hair products."

"Orishas Through the Crossroads and the Gate metaphorically explores the impact of colonization as it pertains to privilege, access, boundaries and transcendence. Through thematic stylization, the installation centers on the syncretism of AfroCaribbean religion with Catholicism. The public is invited to ponder the concept of creolization by playfully engaging with the art in a game of four square."
