YOUTH MENTORING EXPERIENCE |

In 2007, I started a youth mentoring program called HABLA. The goal of the program is to provide guidance for underserved youth who are interested in pursuing careers in the arts. The program stresses the importance of a college and graduate school education, nurtures the children's artistic inclinations and provides knowledge which will help the youth navigate themselves through the academic and professional world of art. HABLA functions in conjunction with my art studio and the HABLA Underground, which is the basement gallery of my art studio.

In 2001, I founded and chartered the nonprofit, all volunteer-run organization, City of Angels Little League (CALL) which serves youth (ages 4-15) in central Los Angeles. My husband, Franklin Ferguson, has since run the league.
The diversity of our league reflects the demographics of our multicultural community. To the right, I am pictured with players from our 2007 softball division. Click on the photo for more pics.

I've functioned as a PTO board member at our children's school in Los Angeles, since the inception of the board in 2004. In 2006, I designed and organized our school's First Annual Potluck and our First Annual Career Day (two separate events).
All of the 18 Career Day speakers were either parents or aunts and uncles of students. Here I am on Career Day with my 5th-born and one of the photo-illustrated Career Day brochures I designed.

In the early 1990's, while enjoying some success as an actress, I ran a youth mentoring program for disadvantaged youth at the St. Aloysius School in my neighborhood of Harlem, New York. Weekly, I brought guest-speakers into the school to help motivate the children towards general success in life. Guest speakers included celebrities, filmmakers, lawyers, doctors, and graduate students.
To the right, I am pictured with guest speakers (child actors) Deon Richmond and Merlin Santana ("Bud" and "Stanley") of "The Cosby Show" and some 8th graders of the St. Aloysius School. Click on photo for more pics. |

In 1993, Trenton State College, in New Jersey, invited me to be the Key Note Speaker at their Minority Awards Graduation Dinner. My talk was entitled "The Values of Mentoring." I also spoke on the subject at my alma mater high school in Princeton, Jct., NJ.

As a young adult and teenager, I coached gymnastics in Princeton New Jersey and Tokyo Japan, taught English in Japan, and served as a camp counselor to youth in both Japan and the US. For eight years, I also served as a Little League "Team Mom," in Inglewood, CA, before founding and chartering the City of Angels Little League in Los Angeles, CA.
