CEIBA DE CUBA by LILI BERNARD Video Abstract
A MULTIMEDIA WORK-IN-PROGRESS

(scroll down for more videos)

This is a video abstract of my interdisciplinary work-in-progress entitled, CEIBA DE CUBA. In a fusion of my paintings, poetry, playwriting, filmmaking and performance, this work weaves real-life stories and fiction to tell the stories my Afro-Amerindian Cuban ancestors and of life in my native Cuba.

The work is in honor of my parents, JOSE RODRIGUEZ BERNARD and GEORGINA PALLEROLS THOMPSON and all of her ancestors.  All paintings, poetry and videography (not including archival film footage of Che Guevara and the 1959 Cuban Revolution) are copyright 2010 by LILI BERNARD. CalArts AOW Conference 2009 videography by VANESSA LIBERTAD GARCIA, with some additional videography of Cuba by GEORGINA PALLEROLS THOMPSON.

LILI BERNARD at CUBAN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2010 LOS ANGELES

On Sunday, May 23, 2010, in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California, I performed SONG OF CHE CHANGO at the 17th Annual Cuban Music Festival. It is a fifteen minute-long poem/spoken word piece that I wrote which ends in performance art. The work explores Che Guevara the Icon and Che Guevara his words and deeds. I performed the entire piece at the festival, however this video shows only the second part of the performance, which includes the rap with percussion and the performance art.  The piece is part of a larger multimedia work-in-progress which I call CEIBA DE CUBA.  As usual, my five young sons accompanied me on percussion.

LILI BERNARD performs portions of CEIBA DE CUBA at the City of Glendale's Man's Inhumanity to Man Symposium. Lili performed the spoken word/performance art, "Song of Che Chango: Rendezvous en La Habana 2013," which explores Che Guevara the icon and Che Guevara his words and deeds. It is part of the fourth act of Ceiba de Cuba, entitled "De Su Flor: Of Her Flower," which deals with life in contemporary Cuba, through the eyes of a ficticious graffiti artist/rapper known as "Che Chango." Lili also performed a staged reading of a portion of the first act in Ceiba de Cuba, entitled "De Sus Raices: Of Her Roots," which tells the story of the genocide that Lili's Siboney (native Cuban) ancestors endured in the 1500's. The role of the Siboney Mother was played by Dolann Adams. The soundtrack is "Es Solo Un Sueño," written and performed by Los Aldeanos of Havana Cuba.
