"SISTAHS IN ART"
Art Show Opening: "SISTAHS IN ART," Saturday, October 27, 2007, 6-9 pm at Lili Bernard Studio-Showroom, 935 Chung King Road, Chinatown, Los Angeles, CA. Show runs through November 10.
Cuban-born, Los Angeles-based painter Lili Bernard and local gourd scupltor Angela Briggs will be showcasing and selling their artwork together at the Lili Bernard Studio-Showroom. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit charitable organization ¡HABLA! Harvesting Asian, Black Latino Artists.
Drawing from more than 40 years of experience, artist Angela Briggs creates dolls, mask and prints that tell stories without words. If a picture is worth a thousand words, Angela's soft sculpture creations are worth volumes. Each creation stands on its own merit and leaves a story to the interpretation of a viewer. As a folk artist, doll making is one of Angela's favorite expressions. Doll making is much more than it implies; it is her history! The art form has survived the savagery of slavery. It has endured Hollywood's erroneous typecasting of dubbing the dolls as voodoo, hoodoo and black magic. Each time Angela create a thematic project using dolls as subjects, she evoke what is real, striving to capture and reveal her experience, first as a human being and second as an African American Woman. Drawing from roots where creativity, conservation resourcefulness and ingenuity are inbred, Angela uses a variety of materials to create sculptures, dolls, masks, jewelry, prints and paintings. Long before the reduce, reuse, recycle slogan became the environmental cry, Angela Briggs was picking, sifting and sorting through a treasure trove of "trash", using found materials to incorporate into her work. Brilliant explosions of color, Lili Bernard's canvases radiate themes from the natural to the spiritual. Story-telling portraits of Lili's ancestors and of Cuban musical greats (such as Celia Cruz) grace Lili's studio walls. Vibrant paintings of exotic flowers and animals and of Cuban cityscapes and landscapes transform Lili's studio space into a tropical delight. The subject matter of Lili's oil paintings celebrates her Indigenous-Afro-Cuban/Jamaican/Spanish/Chinese/British heritage. Lili donates a portion of her studio space for the use of the nonprofit organization ¡HABLA! Harvesting Asian, Black, Latino Artists.
Lili Bernard recently founded and incorporated ¡HABLA! in order to address the dearth of the representation of artists of color in the mainstream art world. The goal of ¡HABLA! is to provide a platform for the voices of artists of color through its all-inclusive youth mentoring programs and by providing scholarships for artists of color to graduate and undergraduate art schools. ¡HABLA! boasts a board of high-ranking professionals, many in the arts and entertainment industry.
The opening will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2007, from 6 pm to 9 pm. The address is Lili Bernard Studio-Showroom, 935 Chung King Road, Chinatown, Los
