I made this painting with my mother in mind. My mom has always blessed our family with her love and fascination for flowers. Where ever we lived, growing up around the globe in Cuba, Spain, New York, New Jersey, Japan and Saudi Arabia, my mother always decorated our abodes with beautiful flower beds.
One of my fondest childhood memories is waking up in the early morning in our New Jersey home to find my mother in the backyard, nine months pregnant with her twelve pound baby number six in her womb, tending meticulously to her beloved purple iris flowers. Wearing garden gloves and crouching low to the earth with her burgeoning belly, she gingerly manipulated a hand-sized shovel and stirred the soil as monarch butterflies floated in the air around her.
